Prayers for Haiti

CNN News reports that “The faithful prayed — for relief, for mercy, for safety — as aftershocks rumbled across Haiti” and we are called to join in their prayers. Witnesses indicate that as the night went on, the singing and praying intensified and then waned.  As they wane, we must intensify our support – standing with them in these devastating hours.  Many missionaries are in Haiti and while we cannot go, we can pray, knowing that corporate and focused prayer carries inexplicable power. 2 Kin 19:20 says  “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; behold, I will heal you.”

The aftermath of a 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Haiti, has caused widespread destruction, fatalities and chaos. The quake, which happened shortly before 5 p.m., was followed by at least 18 aftershocks, averaging a magnitude of 5.0, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.  Much more will be seen as as this day unfolds, please continue in praying earnestly for the needs of these people and their families.  If you are moved to give financially, the American Red Cross and the Central Texas Red Cross are already working in this area.

One Response to Prayers for Haiti

  1. Here is an excerpt from Church of God Ministries News:

As an immediate response, CGM dispatched $10,000 in disaster relief funds to address the immediate needs and provide the funding to help alleviate the suffering. The money was given to career missionaries John and Jodie Ackerman and to Phyllis Newby, the national leader for the Church of God in Haiti.

CGM is developing a three-phase plan to respond to the situation affecting our congregations and the people of Haiti. To inform the development of this plan, CGM sent Phil Murphy to Haiti to conduct an on-the-ground assessment of the situation. While in Haiti, he delivered the emergency funds and visited several locations where the Church of God has a ministry presence. He also met with the Ackermans and spoke with Phyllis Newby. Phil has returned to the states and will provide his report to the Disaster Releif Committee early next week.

CGM anticipates that tens of thousands of dollars will be needed to purchase medical supplies, food, water, fuel, and the materials needed to rebuild homes, churches, schools, and medical clinics. Immediate donations to the Disaster Relief Fund can be made online by clicking here. Or checks can be mailed to Church of God Ministries, PO Box 2420, Anderson, IN 46018-2420. Please write Project 45.04502 in the memo line.

Please continue to pray for the people of Haiti and for wisdom in the planning and implementation of the relief effort.
