Then it was time for their purification offering, as required by the Law of Moses after the birth of a child; so His parents took Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord. The law of the Lord says, If a womans first child is a boy, he must be dedicated to the Lord. So they offered the sacrifice required in the law of the Lordeither a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. – Luke 2:22-24
The Law of Moses made special allowances for poor families. They were able to offer just a few small birds instead of more extravagant sacrifices that the rich could easily afford. Mary and Joseph were not wealthy, but through God’s provision and grace even then, they were able to recognize and give thanks for God’s presence with them despite their material poverty.
God does not require our wealth or possessions, only a humble, grateful heart.
