Still Here

Matthew 24:36-38, 39-44

But the The Sands of Timeexact day and hour? No one knows that, not even heaven’s angels, not even the Son. Only the Father knows… The Son of Man’s Arrival will be like that: Two men will be working in the field—one will be taken, one left behind; two women will be grinding at the mill—one will be taken, one left behind. So stay awake, alert. You have no idea what day your Master will show up. But you do know this: You know that if the homeowner had known what time of night the burglar would arrive, he would have been there with his dogs to prevent the break-in. Be vigilant just like that. You have no idea when the Son of Man is going to show up.

Well,  we’re still here.  The world didn’t end, Jesus did not return to take His people home.  The Christian scriptures clearly reveal that no one will know the time of His return – the end of this world as we know it. Anyone that says they can predict the time or day is misguided (at best) or lying (at worst for some personal or financial gain). It would be laughable if not for the many that believe in these false prophets and fall prey to their schemes or delusions. How do they pick up the pieces today?  We need to pray for them and guide them into a better understanding of scripture and the Savior’s love.

God’s time is not our time.  Even though we may believe we see the signs of the Apocalypse, the “last days” could last a million years by God’s hour glass. The best we can do is be ready whenever that day may come; to have our affairs in order, to have lived and loved well, to have served God and our fellow man with humility and justice.

Years ago, a Christian woman had a strong feeling that the return of Jesus was eminent.  She shared this feeling with several friends and she urgently raised her service and devotion to the Lord with every day.  Within just a few months, this woman unexpectedly died after a short bout of the flu.  As it turned out, she was indeed going to meet the Savior – just not in the way she had expected. Vigilant preparation of your soul is an investment that will not end in disappointment –  whether today, next year, or after our earthly passing, the celebration will come…but you should plan on a surprise party.
