Jesus also was baptized. While He was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit came down upon Him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my own dear Son. I am pleased with You. – Luke 3:21-22
Jesus and John (the Baptist) stood together in the Jordan River. Two men who had known each other from childhood, played together, shared a family bond, and understood where their destinies would take them from this day. Uniquely different, but both united in God’s will. Both fully committed, unmoved by society’s pressures, religious dogma, or the power of kings – nothing could dissuade either from their charted path.
It was in this moment that God chose to reveal Himself, the identity and His paternity of the One who would fulfill all the prophecies of old. This must have been a moment of great joy, not only for God the Father, but for these two friends, standing together, squarely where they knew they needed to be. Obedience and joy go hand in hand.
