Love Depends on You

gettingreadyforthecross.jpgSomeone in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then He said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” -Luke 12:12-15

Greed is defined as “an excessive or rapacious desire, especially for wealth or possessions” [Dictionary.com].  Human desire for things of great value, things of great beauty, things most desirable because they belong to someone else, can motivate terrible acts of deception, malice and violence.  Jesus warns us to guard our hearts against such cravings by the knowledge that He is all we need, the most precious jewel, and the free gift to all.

We may still fall victim to the grievous actions of others and can succumb to the insatiable longing for vengeance or retribution, but is it in forgiveness that we overcome greed in all its forms and break the cycle of pain and “payback” that otherwise perpetuates itself over and over again.  If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone (Romans 12:18).  When seek peace with others, we will find it within ourselves.
