Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews. Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, Do not write The King of the Jews, but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written. – John 19:19-22
After it all, Pilate had the last word with those whom he knew had manipulated and beat him in a battle of power and will. He may not have understood Jesus was the Son of God, but he knew he was the best of the Jews. He may have posted the sign on Jesus cross to spite his opponents or to sooth his own spirit, but this testimony, consistent across all four Gospels, is a credible witness to the story, the power and the person of Jesus Christ.
We have the power to witness to the Christ we know, to spread the gospel and share the good news by our finances, our presence and our participation in His message and mission. We are His witnesses to the world.
