There was a believer in Joppa named Tabitha (which in Greek is Dorcas). She was always doing kind things for others and helping the poor. -Acts 9:36
Dorcas was a believer, just like you and me. She evidently wasn’t a church leader, a committee chairperson, or civic organizer. She was, however, someone who saw needy people all around her, and with the love of Christ as her authority, used her simple gifts and abilities to make life better for others. Dorcas didn’t just help other believers, or those that shared her values, but anyone who needed the warmth of a coat or the embrace of a kindness.
She understood her Christ as the Great Servant of all and lived out her faith as a loving servant of her community. Dorcas may not have changed the world, but she certainly changed her world, and was greatly loved and honored for the difference she made there.
