And they came to Capernaum. And when He was in the house He asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. And He sat down and called the twelve. And He said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” – Mark 9:33-35
The disciples couldn’t speak when Jesus asked them what they had been discussing – they were too embarrassed. “Who would be greatest” was just so ridiculous when standing face to face with Jesus. What about us? How does our petty pride and self righteousness stand up next to Jesus? Perhaps we could avoid those embarrassing moments if were more occupied with serving others than serving ourselves.
