My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken Me, the Spring of Living Water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. – Jeremiah 2:13 (NIV)
“That won’t hold water” is an idiom that means logic is flawed or an idea can’t stand up to scrutiny. Whenever we count on our own power, our own will, our own gods of logic, we will be let down. These are only things that we grasp at like water slipping through our fingers, which can only wet our parched lips, but never satisfy.
Christ is the only vessel that we can trust to hold everything we need and all we could want to quench our thirst today and every day to come.
