Jabez was the one who prayed to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and extend my lands! Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain!” And God granted him his request. – 1 Chronicles 4:10
Jabez might have been less than a footnote in the endless genealogies of the Old Testament, but the author of Chronicles stopped the list of names long enough to elaborate on this man’s life.
It must have been to mark a remarkable relationship with God. One in the family of Judah, whose name means “he causes pain,” stepped out of history to show us how to stop the pain and start being blessed. He would not succumb to the life prophesied by his name, but would instead ask for all the blessings that God could provide, even knowing that he would need to open his entire life to God’s possibilities in exchange.
He was not afraid to ask, not afraid to be blessed, and God honored his bold requests. Oh, that we might reach for all that God wants for us!
