For God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16, New Living Translation
God loved – that’s really an amazing thought. In the ancient world, gods were the demanding recipients of human adoration, to be feared and revered. One might be able to earn the favor of their gods with enough sacrifice and dedication to ritual.
Yet this God of Israel, the God of the New Testament, loved us first unearned, undeserved – sought us out, and sacrificed His only Son for us. Given not for only those seeking Him, those cleaned up and straightened out, but especially for the lost, alone, messed up, freaked out, put down, filled with hate, filled with hurt, unable or unwilling to reach for help.
For those – for us – God loves, God reaches, God gives a life worth living and a love worth having.
